Roka Akor (801 Montgomery St.) debuts today in San Francisco’s Jackson Square area. The Japanese robata grill and sushi restaurant is an extension of a brand that also operates in Scottsdale and Chicago, and although some of the signature dishes are consistent across properties, much of the menu is created especially for San Francisco. Fresh fish is flown in from Japan four times a week for the luxe sashimi and nigiri offerings (think scallop sashimi with shaved black truffles). Executive chef Roman Petry says that is even more frequent delivery than when he actually worked in Japan.
Downstairs, the 68-seat Roka Bar is helmed by bar genius Daniel Hyatt, formerly of the Alembic. He’s devised a cocktail program that includes an extensive Japanese whiskey selection and complex infusions of gin and soju. With a clean, comfortable and minimalist design and dishes that are as inventive and delicious as they are eye-catchingly gorgeous, it is sure to be a well-received addition to the high-end restaurants in the area.
